Transponder keys: why a copy from the hardware store may not start your car

Since the late 1990s most keys carry a small chip (a transponder). The car reads the chip before it allows the engine to start. A plain metal copy opens the door but the engine stays off.

That is why blanks on this site are sold as parts: they must be cut and then programmed to your car, by us locally or by any automotive locksmith with the right equipment.

Ready to find your part? Run the Key Search, browse the shop, or call or text us at (540) 550-9915 and we will match it for you.
